"National Herbal Day is celebrated on 27 May. This commemoration is relatively a new event, because it was first held in 2008. Until 2022, it has practically only been commemorated 14 times."

Jamu has become an inseparable part of Indonesia, especially for people in Java. Traditional jamu has been believed as a way of treating illnesses since the days of ancient kingdoms in the archipelago. Now, in modern times, as a form of preservation and socialization jamu uses, the Hari Jamu Nasional (National Jamu Day) was born.

The stipulation of jamu day began in 2008 during the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). At that time, the existence of jamu was seen as fading out. To overcome this, the National Jamu Day was established on 27 May.

In addition to the stipulation of National Jamu Day, the government has also initiated several things to promote and preserve traditional jamu. One of them was the inauguration of the Indonesian Herbal Masters Program at the University of Indonesia in 2010.

Along with that, there are many studies that aim to make jamu more scientific and its efficacy more accountable. This is accomplished by the Ministry of Health and requires support from all relevant parties from upstream to downstream.

Since the establishment of the National Jamu Day, every year on May 27, various institutions and jamu activists commemorate the National Jamu Day. One of the agencies that participated in commemorating the National Jamu Day was the District Government (Pemkab) of Sukoharjo.

2022 National Herbal Day

National Jamu Day 2022 can be a momentum to re-move various jamu activists and policy makers to further advance traditional jamu.

One of the main keys in advancing traditional jamu is the existence of collectivity and continuity between jamu business actors, raw material farmers, and policy makers. Sustainable performance will create strong products and ecosystems so that traditional jamu medicine is not only special in its own country, but can also be an alternative medicine for the international consumers.

For local governments where there are jamu centers in the area, it is necessary to provide more massive support so that jamu centers in villages can compete with the bigger and more independent herbal medicine companies.
