Not many people understand the difference between toothache and gingivitis. Most might assume that any pain that popped up in the oral areas is a toothache. In fact, the two are different. Gingivitis is inflammation that occurs in our gums and is usually characterized by reddening of the gums. In addition, there will be pain when chewing food. Unlike gingivitis, toothache is a painful condition around our teeth and jaw. Toothache pain varies and is usually felt over a long period of time.

There are several causes of gingivitis, including lack of nutritional intake, poor oral health, plaque, hormonal changes, decreased immune system, and diabetes. To prevent gingivitis, you can start by maintaining oral hygiene.

However, if you already have gingivitis, doctors usually advise us to clean tartar, fill in cavities, floss, and rinse with antiseptic mouthwash.

In addition to those medical suggestions, you can also use alternative traditional medicine with asam kandis/sour mangosteens (Garcinia xanthochymus) to treat gingivitis. It’s easy, just take two asam kandis then mash them until as smooth as paste. Then put it on the inflamed gums for a while. Lastly, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean your teeth and gums from food residue and the tamarind paste.
