Kelor/Moringa (Moringa oleifera) comes from tropical and subtropical regions of South Asia and is a plant species from the Moringaceae family. This plant can grow a long life, has flower all year round, and withstand extreme heat conditions. Kelor is used as a vegetable ingredient and also used as medicine. In the Indonesia archipelago, Moringa has many names including, Kelor (Java), Murong (Aceh), Merunggai (Malay), Kilor (Maluku), Marangghi (Madura), Moltong (Flores), Kelo (Gorontalo), Keloro (Bugis) , and Kawano (Sumba).


Moringa has a woody stem with a height of 7-11 meters, upright, has a dirty-white bark with a thin rough skin surface. Daun kelor (Moringa leaves) are green, long-stemmed, and grow compound. Kelor leaves are rich in nutrients, such as vitamin A, calcium, iron, potassium, and protein. Kelor fruit is triangular in shape with a length of 20-30 cm, green when young and brown when old. Kelor has blackish brown seeds. The taproot is white and enlarged like a turnip.

Moringa has a myriad of benefits for health. A study on the benefits of kelor from its leaves, bark, fruit to its seeds has been started since the early 1980s. WHO also conducted a study and found that kelor is a wonder plant that can be used to treat various diseases. In addition, the results of several studies state that the content of one kelor plant is equivalent to 7 times the vitamin C in oranges, 4 times the calcium in milk, 2 times the vitamin A in carrots, 3 times the potassium in bananas, and 2 times the protein in yogurt. Therefore, kelor is very good for supplementing the body’s nutrition.

As a wonder plant, kelor has priceless benefits to overcome health problems. Among them, it treats diabetes, prevents obesity, prevents joint disease, treats epilepsy, treats anemia, infections (bacteria, fungi, and parasites), increases breast milk production, prevents heart disease, treats asthma, vitamin supplements, and as body antioxidants.
