Who says jamu can only be consumed by people? Livestock can also get the benefits of jamu. Just like humans, livestock can also be unfit and fall ill. Livestock jamu (Jamu ternak) made from several types of rhizomes is effective in restoring the condition of livestock when they are sick or unfit.
There are a number of reasons that affect the health of livestock, including sufficient quality feed, environmental conditions, the season, and inherited factors from the mother. The ability of livestock to resist disease usually also depends on the embryonic period, postnatal or neonatal life, and the presence of immune substances inherited from the parents.
Antibodies in livestock are usually an innate factor acquired from their mother. However, these antibodies can only provide protection until the age of less than 1 month. Therefore, jamu for livestock (jamu ternak) are necessary to enhance the antibodies in the animals’ bodies to prevent them from getting sick.
If you have livestock at home, you can make livestock jamu by following this guide!
Ingredients:
- Livestock jamu solution
- Microbial activator
- Empon-empon (turmeric, temulawak, temu ireng, etc.)
- Shallots
- Garlic
- Betel leaf
- Salt
- Brown sugar
Tools
- Plastic drum
- Stirrer
- Pounder
- Duct tape
Steps to make the livestock jamu:
- Crush the empon-empon and dissolve the brown sugar in 10 liters of water.
- Place all ingredients in a drum, then add water until the volume reaches approximately 2/3 of the drum.
- Close the drum tightly to maintain anaerobic conditions. Do not fill the drum completely; leave some space to accommodate gas from the fermentation process.
- From the first to the fourth day, open the lid every morning to release gas from the fermentation solution, then close it tightly again.
- Leave the solution for approximately 3 weeks, then open the lid. The fermentation process is complete when a white layer, resembling floating powder, appears on top of the solution.
- The finished herbal solution for livestock is now ready to be administered or packaged.
Guidelines for feeding livestock jamu
- When cattle are in poor condition, stressed, or have a low appetite, give the livestock jamu twice a day at a dose of 250 cc/head each time.
- Under normal conditions, it is sufficient to give the livestock jamu 3 times a week at a dose of 250 cc each time.
- For goats, give 100 cc/head for one feeding.
