Aromatherapy works through the sense of smell and skin absorption which directly affects the limbic system of the human brain, the brain associated with mood, emotion, memory, and learning. The effects of aromatherapy on the brain can calm or stimulate the nervous system and help normalize hormone secretion. The physiological effects of scents can be divided into two types: those that act through stimulation of the nervous system and those that act directly on organs or tissues through effector-receptor mechanisms.
