The establishment of Jamu Iboe is an expression of the gratitude of a child to his mother. The Jamu Iboe Company has gone through the worst conditions during the colonial period. It had also been side by side with the colonial government to research various herbal properties. Now in modern times, Jamu Iboe refuses to be obsolete by continuing to innovate.

Jamu Iboe was founded by Mrs. Tan Swan Nio and her daughter Siem Tjiong Nio. First, the name was Djamoe Industrie en Chemicalen Handel “IBOE” Tjap 2 Njonja. The philosophy of the name Iboe is an expression of a child’s respect for his mother. A respect from Siem Tjiong Nio to her mother Tan Swan Nio. A mother is considered as someone who has more attention, affection and loyalty so that the baby and her family can grow and live healthy. This philosophy is incorporated into Jamu Iboe, jamu can be a guardian for the wider community.

During the colonial period until the early days of independence, Jamu Iboe continued to struggle to develop its business. The efficacy of herbs that made European scientists curious can be said to have contributed to the success of jamu produced by Jamu Iboe. In 1945 Jamu Iboe had started advertising in newspapers and already had 11 branches with approximately 1000 agents. In 1973 the name of this jamu company was officially changed to PT Jamu Iboe Jaya. This change also aims to further embed Jamu Iboe products into the national market.

In 2021, Jamu Iboe has entered its 111th year. The company is now held by its fourth generation. During the commemoration of National Jamu Day 2021 last May, Stephen Walla, President Director of PT Jamu Iboe Jaya, shared tips that the company has taken to keep it afloat for more than a century.

In the webinar entitled 111 Tahun Jamu Iboe (111 Years of Jamu Iboe), Stephen explained that Jamu Iboe always makes changes to adapt to market conditions. One of the changes that are being intensively carried out by Jamu Iboe is digitalization.

According to Stephen, the herbal medicine industry should be able to eliminate the notion that consuming jamu is only by brewing it in traditional way. In addition, it must also eliminate the impression that drinking jamu is complicated, bitter, and unpleasant.

From the existing challenges, Jamu Iboe carried out various kinds of regeneration, namely regeneration of jamu drinkers, regeneration of jamu sellers, product regeneration, and regeneration of jamu drinking places.

Jamu Iboe created the IBOE Natural Drink trademark with the aim of creating contemporary jamu products that are delicious, fresh, and of course still healthy. Through this, it is hoped that new products and new consumers will emerge.

To regenerate a place to drink jamu, Jamu Iboe made a Kedai Jamu-IBOE Herbal Bar. Through the IBOE Herbal Bar, jamu with a modern touch will be served in a comfortable and certainly contemporary place. It is hoped that later IBOE Herbal Bar can be found in various places such as malls, campuses, schools, hospitals, and other crowd centers.

During this pandemic, Stephen emphasized that selling digitally is a must. Therefore, online sales are made in various marketplaces. In addition, there is also a reseller program that provides the opportunity for third parties to participate in selling Jamu Iboe products.

Finally, Stephen also emphasized the importance of online promotion. Instagram, Facebook, to Youtube are now powerful promotional tools. Collaboration with various parties will also strengthen the message in the promotion.
